"You Just Don't Get It !"

Before You Dismiss Me

I do not have all the answers, and I have no doubt made errors in my assessment of Claiborne's works. If I knew about the errors I would fix them, so please send me your corrections. This work is the result of several weeks of prayerful study. Upon what do you place your conclusion that "I don't get it"?

Some Questions to Consider

  • Are your objections based on feelings and preference or revealed truth? Is it wiser to ground our beliefs on the unpredictable (even wicked--Jer.17:9; Mat.15:19) winds that drive our emotions or upon God's revelations about Himself and us?
  • We agree that the 21st century professing church is messed up. Has Claiborne exposed only one side of the problem (dead orthodoxy)? What about the opposite (and just as dangerous) error of zealous un-orthodoxy? Note what Paul wrote to the church in Romans about people seeking to establish their own righteousness (by political, lifestyle, and economic choices--aka "legalism lite"). Are these people even saved (from the judgment to come)?

ESV Romans 10:1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2 I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

  • Are you being fed a false dichotomy--a choice between the dead orthodoxy of your parents and "ordinary radicalism"? Are we really forced to choose between truth and authenticity? May I suggest another way--Humble Orthodoxy?
